80% 3.5About Heating System Efficiency
The efficiency for oil, gas, and propane systems ranges from 70% to 95%. Older systems may be less efficient (around 70%), while modern high-efficiency systems can reach up to 95%.
About Electric Heat Pump COP
The Coefficient of Performance (COP) for electric heat pumps ranges from 2 to 4. In milder temperatures (e.g., above 0°F), COP can be 3-4, but in Alaska’s colder climates (e.g., below -10°F), it often drops to 2 or lower due to reduced efficiency in extreme cold.
Data Source and Additional Resources
Fuel costs in MMBTUs were sourced using AKwarm, a free software tool that includes data for nearly 300 cities in Alaska. You can download AKwarm to access the same data from here.
